Derm’s Guide to Pregnancy Safe Skincare

Skincare Junkie® products are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and pregnancy-safe. With Mother’s Day approaching and thinking of fellow skincare junkies who are mothers, getting ready to become, or plan to be a mom one day, we thought we’d chat with our resident mom-of-two, board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare Junkie® founder Dr. Murphy-Rose about what makes skincare products pregnancy-safe.

Can I Use Skincare During Pregnancy?

First thing first, can one use skincare during pregnancy? Yes, absolutely! Skincare is not just safe but recommended during pregnancy to manage the changes that your skin undergoes. The key is to choose products that are pregnancy-safe and address your changing skin concerns.

How Skin Changes During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations can lead to a variety of skin changes. Pregnancy glow is the one we hear about the most, but there may be other unexpected changes:

  1. Hyperpigmentation. Increased hormones can cause melanin production to ramp up, leading to darker patches of skin. For example, melasma appears as dark splotches, typically on the face.
  2. Acne. If you thought you were done with acne after puberty, think again! Adult acne is common in general, but during pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause oil production to go haywire, resulting in breakouts.
  3. Skin sensitivity. Many women find their skin becomes more sensitive and prone to irritation during pregnancy.

These changes are generally temporary and should gradually resolve after pregnancy. However, it means you need to adapt your skincare while pregnant. As always, it’s a good idea to consult with a dermatologist if you are worried about your skin changes.

How Does Skincare Affect Pregnancy?

While most topical skincare products are safe, certain ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially reach the fetus. This is why it's crucial to avoid specific ingredients that can harm fetal development, such as parabens, SLS, phthalates, formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers, and PEGs. What Is Pregnancy Safe Skincare?

Navigating the world of skincare during pregnancy can feel like a challenge. With changes in hormonal levels and skin sensitivity, understanding which products are safe and effective while you await the arrival of your little one takes more than just reading labels.

Pregnancy-safe skincare refers to products specifically formulated to be free from toxic and harmful chemicals and irritants that could potentially affect both maternal and fetal health. These products are generally hypoallergenic, free from active ingredients like retinoids and benzoyl peroxide, and focus on ingredients that are gentle yet effective.

As a mother of two (and pregnant during the development phase of the Skincare Junkie®  products!), Dr. Murphy-Rose was particularly conscious of providing responsible skincare options for consumers that could be safely used while pregnant, breastfeeding, and snuggling with children.

How to Check If Skincare Is Pregnancy Safe?

Always read the label and look for products that are clinically tested for pregnancy. When in doubt, consult with a dermatologist or a healthcare provider. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides are safe and help maintain skin hydration and elasticity. Antioxidants like vitamin C can be used to help with skin brightness and combat dullness.

Pregnancy and Skin Sensitivity

Help, I have acne! Increased skin sensitivity and acne are common due to hormonal fluctuations. To keep your skin problem-free, choose beauty products that are labeled as non-comedogenic, oil-free, and hypoallergenic to reduce the risk of irritations and breakouts. Skincare Junkie® products are sensitive skin friendly, pregnancy-safe and include Gentle Jelly Facial Cleanser, Pore Therapy Daily Toner Pads, Megadose Super Antioxidant Face Moisturizer, and Discoloration Fade Wand

Dermatologist Recommended Pregnancy Skincare

Dr. Murphy-Rose recommends keeping your skincare routine simple and gentle. Look for products labeled as pregnancy-safe, which typically means they have been tested and found to be free of chemicals that could pose a risk during pregnancy.

In the morning, use a gentle cleanser, such as our Gentle Jelly Facial Cleanser, a safe moisturizer, and a mineral-based sunscreen. In the evening, cleanse and apply a rich moisturizer or serum that is appropriate for pregnancy. Look for moisturizers that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which support the skin barrier and maintain moisture without irritating your skin, such as our Megadose Super Antioxidant Face Moisturizer.

While traditional anti-aging products may be off-limits, products with peptides and antioxidant-rich formulations can help maintain youthful skin safely during pregnancy. Opting for vegan skincare products is a good life hack. These products are often free from harsh chemicals and focus on natural ingredients. However, always check the label and do your research.

Skincare Junkie® products are vegan, hypoallergenic, and pregnancy-safe. You can build your pregnancy-friendly skincare routine using our products! As always, it’s a good idea to patch test any new products, consult with a board-certified dermatologist and obstetrician.
